Midnight Blue Guitar Studio
Since 1993, Brian Gross has taught guitar and bass to hundreds of students—both privately and in group classes—under the auspices of his Midnight Blue Guitar Studio. He specializes in teaching blues guitar, but also teaches most styles of music to students of all levels and ages.
Brian also serves as the bandleader and featured musician of the popular blues/swing band BG & the Mojo Hands, playing in venues large and small in the greater Washington, D.C. area.
His instructional method encompasses teaching guitar skills that can be applied to most musical styles and using a series of songs as building blocks in learning these skills.
“I encourage students through patience and an understanding of individualized needs,” he says, “incorporating a variety of teaching methods to meet diverse learning styles.” In addition to pre-selected songs, students may pick songs to learn that appeal to them, further involving them in the learning process.
“Learning to play guitar should be fun!” Brian adds. “Many other instruments require a more formalized and structured approach to teaching, including learning to read standard musical notation.” The guitar is primarily a chordal instrument and songs selected for teaching use a combination of chord boxes and tablature. This teaching approach allows beginners to start playing songs from the very first lesson!
In addition to private instruction, Brian offers group guitar classes. Through the Montgomery County Recreation Department, he has taught Beginning Guitar Levels 1 & 2, Guitar Songs and Beginning and Intermediate Blues Guitar since 1994. As a member of Glen Echo Park’s teaching staff since 1995 Brian has taught Beginning Rock Guitar for Kids Level 1 & 2, Rock Guitar Songs, Beginning & Intermediate Blues Guitar and Blues Guitar Performance Workshop.

Brian Gross is a great teacher; he is able to teach things to his students without making it too complicated. With him I was able to learn how to play guitar in a couple of weeks. I would definitely recommend him

I have been taking lessons with Brian for over a year with my 9 year old son and 11 year old daughter. The lessons have given me an additional way to connect with my children, which has been very gratifying. Brian's teaching is fun and very flexible, giving us the opportunity to select songs and determining the pace of learning. In addition, we have enjoyed watching Brian perform at different venues. To see your teacher perform is very inspiring. The experience with Brian has been much more than just a simple guitar lesson.

We want to thank you for your efforts teaching guitar to Stephen (age 11). From a beginning with no musical background we were amazed how quickly you were able to help him develop a repertoire of chords and rhythms. He maintains a motivation to practice. We especially enjoyed watching him play along with your band. A good measure of his motivation and newly developed love of music is his taking up drums so he can participate in the school band.
Sincerely, Mark and Lori Nowack
